How to Clean Your Glass Pipe or Bong: The Complete Guide
A clean piece hits better, tastes better, and lasts longer. Whether you're rocking a hand pipe or a full-size waterpipe, here's how to keep your glass looking brand new.
Why Cleaning Your Glass Matters
Resin buildup doesn't just look gross — it actively ruins your smoking experience. It restricts airflow, kills flavor, and makes every hit harsher than it needs to be.
Dirty water in a bong is even worse. Stagnant bong water breeds bacteria and mold within 24 hours. If you can smell it, you're already overdue for a cleaning.
Our recommendation: Clean your daily driver at least once a week. Change your bong water after every session. Heavy users should clean every 2–3 days.
Method 1: Orange Chronic (Fastest & Easiest)
Orange Chronic is our go-to recommendation for a reason — it's a one-step cleaner that works in under two minutes. No soaking, no scrubbing.
- Pour it in. Fill your piece with enough Orange Chronic to cover the dirty areas. For bongs, pour it through the mouthpiece and cover the downstem opening.
- Cover all openings. Use your hands, rubber stoppers, or plastic wrap secured with rubber bands.
- Shake hard for 60 seconds. The abrasive particles in the solution do the scrubbing for you.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Make sure no cleaner residue remains.
- Air dry completely before using again.

Method 2: Isopropyl Alcohol + Coarse Salt (The Classic)
The OG method that's been working for decades. Cheap, effective, and you might already have the supplies at home.
- Use 91% isopropyl or higher. Lower concentrations have too much water and won't dissolve resin as effectively.
- Add a generous amount of coarse salt. Kosher salt or rock salt works best — it acts as a physical abrasive that scrubs the glass as you shake.
- Cover openings and shake vigorously for 2–3 minutes.
- For heavy buildup, let it soak. 30 minutes for moderate resin, up to a few hours for seriously caked pieces.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water. No alcohol residue — you don't want to inhale that.
Method 3: Formula 420 (Quick Soak)
Formula 420 is another popular cleaner we carry. It works similarly to Orange Chronic — pour, shake, rinse. Some customers prefer the scent and consistency. Both get the job done. It's really about personal preference.
Cleaning Different Pieces
Hand Pipes / Spoons
Drop the whole pipe into a zip-lock bag with iso + salt. Seal it, shake it, let it soak if needed. The bag method keeps things contained and uses less solution.
Bongs / Waterpipes
Remove the bowl and downstem first — clean them separately. Pour solution into the main chamber, cover the openings, and shake. For percolated pieces, let the solution sit longer so it can work through the perc chambers.
Downstems & Bowls
These get the dirtiest the fastest. Soak them in a small container of iso + salt. Use pipe cleaners or cotton swabs to get into tight spots. A bristle brush works great for downstems.
Dab Rigs / Bangers
Q-tip your banger after every dab while it's still warm — this prevents carbon buildup. For the rig itself, clean it the same way as a bong. For stubborn banger residue, heat it gently with a torch and wipe clean.
Pro Tips from the Shop
- Warm water first. Run warm (not boiling) water through the piece before cleaning to loosen resin.
- Never use boiling water on cold glass. Thermal shock can crack even thick borosilicate. Let the glass warm up gradually.
- Pipe cleaners are your friend. Keep a pack around for hard-to-reach spots like downstem slits and perc arms.
- Clean your ash catcher too. If you use one, it catches resin before it hits your main piece — but only if you keep it clean.
- Fresh water every session. This is the single easiest thing you can do to improve your experience.
- Don't use dish soap on resin. It won't dissolve it. You need alcohol or a purpose-built cleaner.
