How to Choose Your First Waterpipe: A Beginner's Buying Guide

Buying your first waterpipe can feel overwhelming. Beakers, straight tubes, percolators, joint sizes — there's a lot to consider. Here's a no-nonsense guide to help you make the right choice.

Step 1: Choose Your Style

The two most common waterpipe styles are beakers and straight tubes. Each has its strengths.

Beaker Style

  • Wide base = very stable (hard to knock over)
  • Holds more water = better filtration
  • Bigger chamber = larger hits
  • Easier to clean (wider opening)
  • Best for: Beginners, daily drivers

Straight Tube

  • Faster clearing (smoke travels straight up)
  • More concentrated flavor
  • Sleek, minimal design
  • Takes up less space
  • Best for: Flavor chasers, experienced users

Our recommendation for first-timers: Go with a beaker. It's more forgiving, more stable, and gives you a smoother experience while you learn.

Step 2: Pick Your Size

Waterpipes come in all sizes. Here's how to think about it:

Mini (6"–8")Portable, discreet, easy to store. Smaller hits but great for personal use. Perfect if space is limited.
Medium (10"–14")The sweet spot for most people. Good balance of portability and performance. This is what we recommend for your first piece.
Large (16"+)Statement pieces. Bigger chamber, bigger hits, more filtration. Best for home use — these stay on the table.

Step 3: Understand Glass Thickness

Glass thickness is measured in millimeters (mm). Thicker glass is more durable but also heavier and more expensive.

  • 3mm – 4mm: Standard thickness. Fine for careful users. More affordable.
  • 5mm: The sweet spot. Durable enough for daily use without being too heavy. This is what most of our mid-range pieces use.
  • 7mm – 9mm: Heavy duty. HVY Glass territory. These pieces can take a bump and keep going. Worth the investment if you want something that lasts years.

Step 4: Joint Size Matters

The “joint” is where the bowl and downstem connect to the waterpipe. The two most common sizes are:

  • 14mm: Most common for small to medium pieces. Easier to find replacement bowls and downstems.
  • 18mm: Standard for larger pieces. Allows more airflow for bigger hits.

Make sure your bowl, downstem, and ash catcher (if you use one) all match the same joint size. Our staff can help you match everything up.

Step 5: To Perc or Not to Perc?

Percolators add extra filtration for smoother hits. But they also add complexity and make cleaning harder. For your first piece, a simple diffused downstem is plenty of filtration.

Budget Guide

$15–$30Basic glass, thinner walls, simple design. Good for trying out waterpipes without a big commitment.
$30–$75Mid-range. Better glass, thicker walls, possibly a perc. This is where most first-time buyers land.
$75–$150Premium glass from brands like Zob and HVY. Thicker walls, better percolation, built to last.
$150+Top-tier. ROOR, custom pieces, scientific glass. Investment pieces that last a lifetime with proper care.

Essential Accessories for Your First Waterpipe

  • Extra bowl: Always good to have a backup. They're the most commonly broken piece.
  • Ash catcher: Keeps your main piece cleaner for longer. Catches ash and resin before it enters the water chamber.
  • Glass cleaner: Orange Chronic or Formula 420. Clean your piece weekly for the best experience.
  • Grinder: A 4-piece grinder gives you an even grind and collects kief. Essential for any setup.
