What Is a Percolator? Glass Waterpipe Guide for Beginners

If you've ever wondered what those fancy glass structures inside a waterpipe do — this guide is for you. Percolators are the secret to smoother, cooler hits.

What Does a Percolator Do?

A percolator (or "perc") is a filtration device built into a waterpipe. It forces smoke through water multiple times, which cools it down and filters out harsh particles.

The result? Smoother hits that are easier on your throat and lungs. More filtration = more comfort. That's why experienced smokers tend to prefer pieces with percolators.

Types of Percolators

There are many styles, each with different levels of filtration and drag. Here are the most common ones you'll find at Mister Smokes:

Diffused Downstem

The most basic form of percolation. Slits at the bottom of the downstem break smoke into smaller bubbles. Found in most beaker-style waterpipes. Simple, effective, easy to clean.

Tree Percolator

Multiple arms (like tree branches) with slits at the bottom. Each arm creates its own stream of bubbles. More arms = more filtration. Looks beautiful in action.

Honeycomb Percolator

A flat disc with dozens of tiny holes. Smoke passes through all the holes at once, creating tons of small bubbles. Excellent filtration with minimal drag. One of our favorites.

UFO / Showerhead Percolator

A disc or dome shape with slits around the bottom edge. Creates a "shower" of bubbles. Zob Glass is known for their UFO percs — smooth, consistent, and visually impressive.

Recycler

Water and smoke cycle through two chambers continuously. This keeps the water fresh and the hits incredibly smooth. Best for concentrates and low-temp dabs. We carry recycler rigs from Mister Smokes' own line.

More Percs = Better?

Not always. More percolators means more filtration and smoother hits, but it also means:

  • More drag: You have to pull harder to get the smoke through
  • Harder to clean: More chambers = more places for resin to build up
  • Less flavor: Heavy filtration can mute some terpene flavors

For most people, a single good percolator is the sweet spot. If you're dabbing, a recycler is ideal. For dry herb, a honeycomb or tree perc works great.

How to Choose Your First Percolated Piece

  1. Decide your use: Dry herb or concentrates? This determines the style.
  2. Set a budget: Percolated pieces range from $30 to $300+.
  3. Consider cleaning: Simpler percs are easier to maintain.
  4. Try it in person: The drag and feel matter — come test it at the shop.
