Smoke Shop Etiquette: What to Know Before Your First Visit
Walking into a smoke shop for the first time can feel intimidating. Here's a quick guide so you know what to expect and how to get the most out of your visit.
1. Bring Your ID
This is non-negotiable. You must be 21 or older to purchase smoking accessories in California. Bring a valid, non-expired government-issued ID. We card anyone who looks under 40 — it's the law, and we take it seriously. No ID, no sale. No exceptions.
2. Know What You're Looking For (Or Don't — That's Fine Too)
If you know exactly what you want, great — tell the staff and they'll point you right to it. But if you're browsing or unsure, that's totally fine.
Just say something like "I'm looking for a beginner-friendly waterpipe" or "What disposable vapes do you recommend?" Good staff will guide you without pressure.
3. Don't Touch the Glass Without Asking
Glass pieces are fragile and expensive. If you want to hold something, ask the staff — they'll be happy to take it out and let you inspect it. This protects both you and the shop. Nobody wants to accidentally break a $200 ROOR beaker.
4. Use the Right Terminology
Smoke shops sell accessories for legal use. Here are some terms to keep in mind:
- Waterpipe — not "bong"
- Hand pipe — not "bowl"
- Oil rig / dab rig — for concentrates
- Herbs / dry herb — the proper term
Using the right words shows respect for the shop and keeps everyone on the right side of the law.
5. Ask Questions — Seriously
Good smoke shop staff love talking about products. Ask about the difference between percolators, which papers burn slowest, or what torch is best for your rig. At Mister Smokes, our team uses the products we sell — so you're getting real experience, not a script.
6. Don't Haggle (But Do Ask About Deals)
Prices are set for a reason. But it's always worth asking about bundle deals, rewards programs, or current promotions. At Mister Smokes, our Rewards Program earns you up to $150 in benefits — just ask to sign up.
7. Be Respectful of the Space
Don't bring outside food or drinks near the glass displays. Keep your phone conversations brief. And if you're with friends, keep the energy chill. A smoke shop is a retail space — treat it like one.
