What Is a Dab Rig? A Beginner's Guide
New to dab rigs? Here's what one is, how it differs from a bong, what the parts are, and how to use one from start to finish.
What Is a Dab Rig?
A dab rig is a type of water pipe designed specifically for use with concentrates β wax, shatter, oil, live resin, and similar extract materials. It filters vapor through water the same way a bong filters smoke, but the heating method and the attachment you load material into are completely different.
Instead of a bowl you pack with herb, a dab rig uses a banger or nail β a quartz, titanium, or ceramic attachment that gets heated with a torch and then receives a small amount of concentrate. The material vaporizes on contact, passes through water, and reaches you as filtered vapor.
Dab Rig vs. Bong β What's the Difference?
The core difference is what you're consuming and how heat is applied. A bong uses a bowl and combustion β you load dry herb, apply flame directly to the material, and draw smoke through water. A dab rig uses a banger or nail and convective heating β you heat the banger with a torch, remove the heat source, apply concentrate, and draw vapor through water.
Dab rigs also tend to be smaller than bongs. Smaller chambers and shorter pathways preserve the flavor compounds in concentrate vapor better than a long, large chamber would. The rigs are designed around a different goal β a bong built for big smoke clouds isn't optimized for what concentrate users are after.
The Parts of a Dab Rig
The Rig
The glass water pipe body β the base, water chamber, and mouthpiece. Comes in different sizes and percolator styles. Smaller rigs are common for concentrate use.
The Banger or Nail
The attachment that connects to the joint of the rig and gets heated by the torch. Quartz is the most popular material for flavor clarity and durability. Titanium heats faster. Ceramic holds heat longer. Most beginners start with quartz.
The Carb Cap
A cap that covers the top of the banger after you apply concentrate. It regulates airflow and keeps heat contained inside the banger, allowing a full hit at lower temperatures without losing material.
The Torch
A butane torch used to heat the banger to the right temperature. A standard lighter doesn't produce enough heat. An e-nail is an alternative that heats electronically and holds a set temperature, but most setups use a butane torch.
The Dab Tool
A small metal or glass wand used to handle concentrate and apply it to the hot banger. You don't want to touch concentrate directly to a banger with your fingers.
How to Use a Dab Rig β Step by Step
Add water to the rig. Enough to cover the bottom of the downstem β same as you would fill a small bong.
Heat the banger. Apply the torch flame to the outside of the banger for 20β40 seconds depending on thickness. The banger will glow slightly when fully heated.
Let it cool. Wait 30β60 seconds after the glow fades before applying concentrate. Lower temperature hits preserve flavor and are easier on the material.
Apply the concentrate. Use your dab tool to place a small amount of concentrate into the banger. Start small β you can always do more.
Cap and inhale. Place the carb cap over the banger and draw slowly. The cap keeps the vapor inside the banger until it reaches the water chamber.
Clear the rig. Keep drawing until the chamber clears.
Clean the banger. While still warm, swab the inside with a cotton swab to remove residue. This keeps the quartz clean and maintains flavor session after session.
What to Look for in Your First Dab Rig
Keep it simple. A compact rig β 6 to 8 inches is a common starting size β with a quality quartz banger is all you need to start. You don't need percolators, recyclers, or elaborate glasswork on your first rig. Those features matter more once you know what you're doing and what you want.
A flat-top quartz banger with a basic carb cap is the standard beginner setup for good reason. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and gives you an accurate baseline for what a dab rig experience should feel like.
Budget for the full setup: the rig, a quartz banger if it's not included, a carb cap, a dab tool, and a butane torch. You can get into a functional beginner setup without spending a lot β but cutting corners on the torch or the banger will make the whole experience worse than it should be.
