What borosilicate glass is

Borosilicate is a type of glass made with boron added to the mix. It handles heat changes better than ordinary soda-lime glass, which is why it is also used in lab equipment and cookware.

Why glassmakers use it

Pieces get heated, cooled and cleaned often. Borosilicate resists thermal shock far better than soft glass, and it holds up to regular use. That makes it the go-to for rigs, bangers and waterpipes.

Thickness matters too

Material is only half of it. Wall thickness affects how a piece handles bumps and daily wear. Heavy pieces from makers like HVY Glass are built around that idea. Thicker usually costs more, but it can last longer.

How to judge a piece in your hand

Check that the walls are even, the joints are smooth and the seams are clean. Hold it up to the light and look for cloudy spots, bubbles or uneven welds.

  • ✓Even wall thickness all the way around
  • ✓Smooth, clean joints and seams
  • ✓Clear glass without cloudy patches
  • ✓A solid feel in the hand, not flimsy

Care for it

Regular cleaning keeps glass looking clear. Soak it in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, rinse with warm water and let it dry fully. See our full cleaning guide for steps.

Common Questions

Is borosilicate glass stronger than regular glass?

It resists thermal shock much better than ordinary glass, so it handles heat changes well. It can still break if dropped.

Are all bongs made of borosilicate?

Not all. Quality pieces usually are, while cheaper ones may use soft glass. Ask the seller what a piece is made from.
